Sketches: A Post-Apocalyptic Dystopian Sci-Fi Novel (Colony Six Book 1) Kindle Edition
Someone will do anything to stop them from learning the truth
New Series from the Bestselling Author of the Unbounded Series.
Eighty years after Breakdown, Detective Reese Parker has pulled herself up from the dregs of society in Welfare Colony 6 to become a sketch artist and enforcer for the CORE (Commonwealth Objective for Reform and Efficiency). She works hard with other enforcers to maintain peace and order among the CORE's two million residents, especially against the radiation-crazed outsiders called fringers. But Reese hides a secret she can never share with anyone, a secret that killed her father and ruined the life of the person she once loved more than anyone.
When a new assignment sends Reese to Amarillo City, near where she grew up, she's partnered with Jaxon Tennant on the Violent Crimes Investigation Unit, and she knows her secret won't stay secret long. Somehow their past is connected to missing scientists and programmers, but all leads go nowhere: evidence disappears, witnesses change testimony, and names vanish from the CORE database. Someone is willing to do anything to stop Reese and her former Colony 6 crew from discovering the truth behind what has been done to them—and thousands of others.
To learn what they have become, Reese and her friends must go against the very foundations of the society they serve. There is no going back.
Sketches (Colony Six, Book 1) is the first of a series following the six members of the Colony 6 crew. .

About the authors
International bestselling author Teyla Branton grew up avidly reading science fiction and fantasy and watching Star Trek reruns with her large family. They lived on a little farm where she loved to visit the solitary cow and collect (and juggle) the eggs, usually making it back to the house with most of them intact. On that same farm she once owned thirty-three gerbils and eighteen cats, not a good mix, as it turns out. Teyla always had her nose in a book and daydreamed about someday creating her own worlds. She is now married, mostly grown up, and has seven kids, including a five-year-old, so life at her house can be very interesting (and loud), but writing keeps her sane. Grabbing any snatch of free time from her hectic life, she escapes to her office to write. She loves guns, martial arts, and belly dancing. Teyla writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and science fiction. She also writes romance and romantic suspense under the name Rachel Branton. International bestselling author Rachel Branton has worked in publishing for over twenty years. She loves writing women's fiction and traveling, and she hopes to write and travel a lot more. As a mother of seven, it's not easy to find time to write, but the semi-ordered chaos gives her a constant source of writing material. She warns her children that if they don't behave, they just might find themselves in her next book! She's been known to wear pajamas all day when working on a deadline, and is often distracted enough to burn dinner. (Okay, pretty much 90% of the time.) A sign on her office door reads: Danger. Enter at Your Own Risk. Writer at Work. Under the name Rachel Branton, she writes romance, romantic suspense, and women's fiction. Rachel also writes urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and science fiction under the name Teyla Branton. For a free ebook and to hear about new releases, please visit http://www.RachelBranton.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2019This is one of those books that never slows down. A few great twists. A few questions not answered, perhaps in the next book. Never a dull moment.
Each of the characters are strong yet have a tender side to them. What an imagination. I would love to be able to sketch from someones else's mind.
Action packed with just a very tiny hint of romance between Reese and her long time friend from childhood Jaxon. I hope it blossoms into something in future books.
This is my first time reading this author's work. I must say I am impressed. For the length of the book the editing was very good. I caught one minor typo which did not interfere with the reading.
I would wholeheartedly recommend this book/series to everyone.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2017I was really hooked on the Unbounded series by this author, so I was a little unsure of this new series. I am please to say Teyla Branton has sucked me in again! Don't get me wrong, there are a few slow spots that actually allowed me to put the book down and get a good nights sleep, but I just kept picking it up again. Then I knew I was trapped! I could not put it down the further into the CORE I got. The Crew are each in their way outstanding individuals, and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. Once again Ms. Branton has lured us into a world she has created characters that will not let you down.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2019A good, solid story, well written, engaging and entertaining throughout. I don’t get the previous reviewers comment about necessary stupidity to advance the storyline, that’s something that bothers me, a lot, and one of the reasons i always read reviews first. I downloaded the book just as a punt having read that review and been put off initially. I needn’t have worried in that respect, i read them more as decisions you’d probably make in real life. The only downside I found was the ending, which I won’t go so far as to say is a cliffhanger, but it’s certainly left a lot of questions open for me that could have still been answered, even with keeping a lead in to the next book. It just didn’t wrap up the final scene well and that makes this not a standalone read to me. That said, I enjoyed this so much I will happily purchase the next.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2019This book carries you effortlessly through two-thirds of the book and you're thinking, 'this is a damn good story.' Then it falls off rather precipitously and the 'damn good story' becomes as thin as late morning mist. It's similar to an old cowboy movie - the bad guys have not so much as a hint of good or reasonable, and the good guys could, if necessary, rise from the dead. People who must be stupid to make the story work are just so inevitably stupid, you can't believe it. I think this is the end of the series, at least for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2017After reading Teyla Branton's Unbounded series and also her romances, under her pen name Rachel Branton, I knew I would love this sci-fi Fantasy!! It's got everything; romance, fantasy, character depth, mystery, technology, danger and so much more!! You'll get swept away with the story and intrigue of their abilities from the beginning and wont be able to put it down half way through!! There are a couple slow areas just after the beginning but because this is a series you really do get to know the characters and once you re-meet all of the crew from colony 6 you'll be rooting for them along all the twists and turns. And it does pick up quickly so no worries! Highly recommended!! Looking forward to the next book.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2025Kept you guessing what happens next, any age would enjoy this book. Looking to the years of outbreak takeover by people left in power, can see them experimenting on low class people, don't agree but reading makes it come alive.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2019I just love the minds of Science Fiction writers. Their unique stories run the gambit of what could possibly be fiction and impossible, to the scenes in back to the future. The Deloran vehicle comes to mind immediately. So the story starts with a group of pre teenagers, who are just trying to survive the life they have been given. Parents are forced to work 6 days a week and their children are left to fend for themselves. Two of the children are very best friends and have something extra that they can do. Reese can draw anything and her best friend has premonitions of what is going to happen. Without giving anything away, the story follows them into separation and adulthood. A very good start to this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable
This was an enjoyable part one of a post-apocalyptic story set in the future where battles against oppression come from surprising places.
Good characters and plot, and a great sense of place.
Well written and recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A post apocalyptic sci fi dystopian murder mystery borderline YA urban fantasy
This started off as a 4.5 star read, although the cover artwork suggests it to be a YA urban fantasy. In some ways it was. In the beginning the author introduces us to the story of a murder/kidnapping mystery, then it somehow the storyline became all dystopian. And then it made sense for the past to become full circle.
Too many characters and multiple point of views diluted the story for me as it then got too hard to follow. If the points of view be limited to only Reese and Jaxon, the story would be less cluttered.
Reese, her potential ability to attract men - the attraction to the doctor was a bit weird. I thought maybe the story would go towards the reverse harem...
Overall it was an average read but not a quick read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced riveting start to a post-apocalypse series
I was loathe to put this book down before I had finished reading the last page!
Many years after a nuclear outbreak, the United States of America are no longer as we know them today: a group of Elite govern several districts, with the majority of citizens confined in so-called colonies, where they work for the good of all, until they prove they are an asset to society and can leave the colonies. When Reese, who escaped one of these colonies and is now an enforcer for the powers-that-be, finds herself re-united with her old gang from her colony, the suspicion that this is not a coincidence raises its head; add to that their unique abilites, and all does not seem to be as it should. But when the group start digging deeper, they realise that they are being hunted.
A very good plot with twists and turns, and sympathetic protagonists with a surprising depth, combined with the author's ability to tell a fast-paced tale full of tension makes this an absolute joy to read. I found it very difficult to interrupt my reading for whatever reason, and I cannot wait to get the second book in this series into my hands to see how the story goes on.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great new dystopian adventure
Branton delivers a fabulous opening salvo in this very promising dystopian series. Great characters, strong world building and a much more complex plot than I expected.
Consistenly entertaining.
A great read.
