- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2016This is a really fun and satisfying read, all the way up to the very end. I'm not normally a mystery fan; probably because they aren't all written as well as this one is. Corbin's writing style is a perfect balance of action and description, bringing in all the senses for a big ride. His chapter-by-chapter reveals kept me thrilled and guessing, the characters were realistic and the details and action accurate. There was more than one gasp out loud while reading this!
There is a fair bit of graphic violence in this story. Even so, we don't have maniacal evil characters that are supernatural or any such dark forces. In the end, though, there is a bit more of a human dark-streak in our favorite characters than we thought... which was quite entertaining.
If you are looking for a fast, fun read for a weekend away or maybe a great addition to your summer mysteries, I can recommend this one highly.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2016The plot of this book was fascinating. In fact, I wish I would have written the story. However, too much space given to Peter's anguish. We got it, he was horrified and guilty. In real life no cell phones, much less a coffee maker, gets through the metal detectors. Just not allowed for a visitor in the building. Peter was written as someone the average person would think was going through drug withdrawal even after a week of being in court. The side story was unnecessary. Not one likeable character, other than his mother. I found myself wishing he would confess and be done with it. Christine was a unhinged person as well.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2016I had trouble putting this one down. The suspense builds throughout the story as Peter Robertson endures the agony of serving on a jury where he is far too involved in the case. The court scenes were very believable, and Corbin's characters are interesting, varied, and well developed. I loved the twists at the end. Through the middle, I felt that descriptions of Peter's emotional and physical pain were a little repetitious and would have been more obvious to those around him. Nonetheless, this is a great story with a unique premise and I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2016This was one of the most poorly written books I have ever read. I was very disappointed. I liken it to an 8th grader's thought process. I won't be buying any more books from this author. I love a good crime novel, but will stick with known authors like Deaver, Sanford and Stelljes. I like to try new authors and usually go by the middle of the road reviews. This was not even middle of the road.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2016Corbin is a master storyteller who has honed his skills on the stage with many very good plays. Now he brings us a much anticipated mystery which asks the question, "What would you do if your were on a jury for the murder that you committed?"
Lying In Judgement is complex with a plot that feels like there is no way out. The language clear and concise with an unreliable narrator. It left me guessing right up to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 11, 2016What a great premise! But what an incredibly disappointing execution! Full disclosure, I couldn't finish the book (rare for me). The author got fixated on repeatedly describing the main character's visceral reactions to court testimony ... why!? And then there's the seemingly unrelated and quite boring side story about his mother, who is quite ill, and his antagonistic yet distant siblings. I know there are many who disagree, but I am not a fan of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 1, 2022My rating system:
5 stars - Absolutely loved it! I would definitely read again anytime!
4 stars - Really liked it! Will most likely read again sometime.
3 stars - Liked it. Glad I read it but probably won't read again.
2 stars - Didn't like it. Glad I'm done with the book and I'll never read it again.
1 star - Very rare rating. Absolutely hated the book. Will never read again and I'll probably burn any copies I come across.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2016A profoundly compelling premise which carries strongly throughout the novel. The courtroom scenes were some of the most authentic and well written that I have some across. The character development, pacing, imagery and plot line were all very strong. My only complaint was the over done (to me) depiction of the protagonist's emotional and physical reactions as he faced his actions and their consequences.
A strong debut and I look forward to more of Gary Corbin's work.
