Total Immersion: An Academic Thriller (Doctor Rowena Halley Book 6) Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 40 ratings

Sometimes lightning strikes twice.

Doctor Rowena Halley was really hoping that a summer in California would help her heal from the previous semester’s injuries, mental and physical. Instead, it might throw her into the greatest danger she’s faced yet.

Spending the summer working in Monterey and living with her boyfriend Alex was supposed to prove to both of them that they were ready to take their relationship to the next level. But what it’s really shown is that they’re still clinging to old flames.

To make matters worse, their old flames have problems of their own. Problems that are refusing to stay in the past. Love is supposed to hit you like a bolt of lightning. But lightning is dangerous—and sometimes it strikes twice.

On her last weekend in California, Rowena gets sucked into a search for Alex’s missing ex-girlfriend. What should have been a few phone calls turns into a life-or-death confrontation—and Rowena may have to pay for other people’s past sins. As Rowena is about to discover, hell hath no fury like a woman scorned—but mother nature’s fury is even greater.

Combining mystery and action with a side of romance and a strong dose of humor and snark,
Total Immersion will appeal to fans of Kinsey Millhone, Stephanie Plum, and Jeri Howard, or anyone who loves strong, smart heroines.

*Content warning: along with the kind of colorful language you’d expect from a collection of world-weary journalists and hardened Iraq vets, this story contains discussions of codependent relationships, intimate partner abuse, and the darkest side of the War on Terror. You’ve been warned.*

In her other life, Sid Stark lives a life very similar to that of her characters, except with more tedious grading and fewer exciting chase scenes. She did once get held up at Heathrow on suspicion of being a Russian criminal traveling on a fake American passport, though, which was fun.

There is something poignant about the Rowena Halley series. The heroine is a good woman, with a fine and distinctive intelligence, that shows itself in her dedication to teaching, writing and researching, but also in the way in which she ends up intervening to help people with major problems. One act of conscientious help leads to another, and is often riskier for her. This one ends with a stunning moment of self understanding, quite unlike the usual mystery novel. I loved the realistic picture of academic life, particularly those struggling to get a tenure track position. It was very readable, and I look forward to the next in the series.

I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series and the latest is no exception. Rowena is a fabulous character and her adventures combined with the author’s thoughtful treatment of a romantic crisis make for an enjoyable read. I was sorry to reach the end!

For her summer break, Rowena Halley tries to enjoy life with her boyfriend Alex Miller in Northern California. An investigative reporter has found links to an oil-for-food deal and Rowena's friends leading to a worrisome disappearance. Using her thinking and deduction skills, Rowena finds links that others haven't found and asks her Russian friend to try to track the missing person, Erin. Everything turns to trouble including a couple of minor earthquakes which serve to unnerve nearly everyone.

Rowena manages to overcome jealousy, clean her boyfriend's apartment and negotiate with her ex-fiancée while searching for Erin, the girl who has captured Alex's heart. Shots are fired; Rowena gets a ride to a hospital while wearing handcuffs.

This tale is more of a romantic adventure than an academic thriller. By now, Rowena has your heart. Her attempts to find Alex’s missing girlfriend are well beyond the call of friendship.
