About the author

USA TODAY bestselling author Sophie Barnes writes historical romance novels in which the characters break away from social expectations in their quest for happiness and love. Having written for Avon, an imprint of Harper Collins, her books have been published internationally in eight languages. With a fondness for travel, Sophie has lived in six countries, on three continents, and speaks English, Danish, French, Spanish, and Romanian with varying degrees of fluency. Ever the romantic, she married the same man three times—in three different countries and in three different dresses.
When she’s not busy dreaming up her next swoon worthy romance novel, Sophie enjoys spending time with her family, practicing yoga, baking, gardening, watching romantic comedies and, of course, reading.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025My oh my. This book is fire! The series has me on the edge of my seat. Many themes presented here are very dark, so if that is not your thing then you may wish to choose something else. But if you don't mind exploring that world, including in historical England, then this series is right up your alley. Book 3 in the House of Croft series picks up right where book 2 leaves off, so if you haven't read the previous books, I highly recommend doing so. **Spoilers ahead from books 1 and 2, I have tried not to include any from this book.** Adrian believes his wife Samantha betrayed him, and he faces imprisonment, a trial, and execution, more than likely. Someone has it out for Adrian, though he tried to renounce his criminal past and is trying to do the police's job since they have not been very good at locating killers (really interesting crimes in and of themselves, but to save time I will not go into them here). The police are being controlled by an unknown entity with regard to Adrian, it seems. Though Samantha, a sleeper agent and trained assassin, had been assigned to get close to Adrian and find evidence of his crimes by her mentor/handler in book 1, she saw Adrian for who he really was and knew he did not deserve this attempted persecution. But for how much longer can she play to both sides? Her true devotion is to Adrian, whom she has since wed, but she does not want to alienate her mentor or the police. Can Samantha manage to untangle Adrian from the mess of his arrest and the crimes of which he is accused in time? Adrian is not without power but is hampered by the imprisonment. What happens in this book is absolutely fascinating, to include a new crime ring being uncovered and a "sister" with whom Samantha was raised and trained is assigned to go after her. Go get this book and series now!! I was honored to be provided with an ARC but was not obligated to write a review. But how can I not, with how awesome the book is?!? All opinions above are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2025Sophie Barnes has outdone herself with yet another remarkable installment in this exceptional series! From the first book, readers are plunged into a thrilling world of espionage, betrayal, and suspense, and this continuation is no exception. Picking up after Adrian’s arrest and the appearance of Samantha’s betrayal, the story grabs you from the start and doesn’t let go.
Adrian, falsely accused of murder, faces an impossible trial, while Samantha risks everything to rescue him and rekindle the love they share. The addition of the mystery of who is stealing kids off the streets added another level of intrigue to the story.
Supporting characters like Edward, the Earl of Marsdale, and Kendrick, the Bow Street Runner, add unexpected layers of loyalty and doubt, making the twists all the more captivating. The courtroom drama brims with heart-pounding suspense, delivering surprises that kept me guessing until the end.
Barnes’s mastery of character development, intricate plotting, and emotional depth truly shines here. She expertly blends intrigue with romance, creating a story that’s as heartfelt as it is electrifying.
This series is a masterpiece of thrilling storytelling, and I can’t wait to see where Barnes takes us next. If you haven’t started it yet, now is the time—you’re in for an unforgettable journey!
I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2025I want to preface that I don't know if you need to read the other House of Croft stories to understand this story, but after reading ARAW I would recommend them based on how much I enjoyed this story!
We follow along on two plot lines, one is Molly Atkins who was kidnapped and the other is the Crofts. After Adrian Croft is captured and charged with mur der, his wife Samantha goes on pursuit to free him, while his best friend works to prove his innocence in the matter. There are forces clearly working against them, and when the situation turns to the gallows, drastic matters are taken. The plots eventually collide and we wait to see if good or evil will win the day!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2025I was eagerly anticipating this third book in the House of Croft series, and wow, did Sophie Barnes deliver! Just as one mystery is being wrapped up, another begins: who is snatching children from the streets of London? Oh yes, and how will Samantha keep Adrian from hanging for a murder he admits committing? Will their relationship survive the apparent betrayal that opens the book (and ended the second book in the series)? So many twists and turns, and a surprise near the end that stunned me (no spoiler here). Once again, many secondary characters are richly drawn in this book, leading me to hope that future books will move the focus to them. The themes are universal, the tension is believable, and I couldn’t put the book down. I look forward to future books in this series, which I am confident will pick up where this one left off. Hoping the next book focuses on Melody and Edward, whose potential for romance is building. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader's Copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2025This is the third book in the series, and since it is a continuation, I recommend that they be read in order.
Adrian has been charged with murder of a peer's son and is awaiting trial in the corrupt judicial system.
Samantha, who is also trying to evade the law and try to help Adrian escape, enlists the help of Marsdale, Adrian's friend.
This is a fabulously entertaining story, with lots of action, plot twists and interesting secondary characters.
There is no end to this story. I can't wait to see where the next book in the series goes.
Bravo, Sophie you "knocked this one out of the park."
