Betrothal or Breakaway: A Hockey Romance (D.C. Eagles Hockey Book 3) Kindle Edition
Book three in the D.C. Eagles Hockey Series!
Can Ford Remington–team captain of the D.C. Eagles–forge the future he wants?
Ford’s love life isn’t non-existent, it’s just hopelessly one-sided. And the only woman he’s ever wanted—his childhood best-friend, Amber—doesn’t reciprocate his feelings. So why bother dating?
When Amber’s fiancé leaves her pregnant, and without health insurance, she’s prepared to do it all alone. Until childbirth causes complications with her heart and she needs minor heart surgery.
Ford proposes a plan: a quickie wedding, insurance for Amber and her baby girl, and two years of platonically wedded bliss.
But how will he let go when he’s not only in love with Amber, but also with her baby girl who now feels like his own?
And even worse, Ford might have to walk away sooner than he ever expected …
Betrothal or Breakaway is a dual pov, fade to black romance, with lots of sizzle but no spice.
This work of fiction contains mild language, depictions of child neglect, bullying (minimal), and the death of an animal (not descriptive). If you are sensitive to these subjects, please use these trigger warnings to make an informed decision about reading this story.

Betrothal of Breakaway by Leah Brunner third in the D.C. Hockey Series. This book was adorable and one that I couldn’t help but just smile constantly over the sweetness of the couple. FYI. I have read all in the series so far. I first started by reading them but when they came out in audiobooks I started listening to them instead. I absolutely love the whole series. Ford was just a lovable character and I could feel everything he was going through in the book and I loved that. I love the found family within this book between the hockey players and loved that when Amber came on the scene she found a family she didn’t have before. This is a friends to lovers story which I think is done perfectly well. Ford has had feelings for Amber since they were kids and we get to see glimpses of their past in the book which is so special. We see how Ford has feelings for Amber and I love how their friendship blossoms into more as the story goes on. This book was beautifully written.
Some Things I loved:
The Neurodivergent Rep
The scene’s from their childhood
How Ford is with Nella (Amber’s Daughter)
The ring shopping scene
Ford interaction with his team, I just love the whole team.
The teams interaction with Nella
The Sick bed scene
And the My Wife Scene (Oh my)
Some Tropes included found family, marriage of convenience, friends to more, & single mom.
I believe the author has this one labeled fade-to-black or low-spice. I will say there is no open door scene. It’s the perfect sweet with heat kind of book. There is a small amount of language in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2024I was after escapist fiction and saw this book recommended by another author. A childhood best friends/marriage of convenience for health insurance? Sign me up.
I devoured this book easily because it was just sweet and I enjoyed the two characters. Amber and Ford were just adorable together. As a non-Autistic person I was given some understanding how Ford views the world and how overwhelming it can be for him when he experiences too much change and ‘noise’. I adored how from day one eight-year-old Amber just need to be a point of calm for him melting down under their shared desk in primary school. But as adults Ford tried hard to regulate himself. His instant love for baby Nella? Too sweet.
The plot developed nicely and was well paced. For me though, Ford was the standout character, doing his best to deal with all the changes to his careful routine while also holding a lifelong candle for Amber. I did enjoy Amber finally coming to the realisation that Ford was it for her, but I do think that Amber's change of view on Ford didn't quite come off as well, because it could be interpreted that she only looked at him as a man after all he did for her. She admits she'd never looked at him like that except once when they were 18 she just assumed he didn't see her in that way so she never thought anymore about it? I find that understandable and yet she knew he was Autistic and struggled with social cues.
This is the perfect book when you just want to escape into a book that won’t stress you out.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2025So, I have been intrigued by Remy since I first read about him in Passon or Penalty and Desire or Defense by Leah Brunner. I knew his story would be a good one. Well, life happened and I didn’t get a chance to read his story Betrothal or Breakaway until this month. Remy’s story was everything I was expecting and more. It was so fabulous.
When Ford Remington’s best friend Amber ends up alone and with a brand new baby, he knows he will do anything to help her. When he learns that Amber needs to have minor heart surgery, he knows the best way to help Amber is to marry her. After Ford convinces Amber the benefits of marrying him—insurance and help with her baby—he just needs to figure out how to keep his feelings for his best friend a secret. The story that follows is so full of heart and hope and romance.
Ford was a dream. I loved how Brunner slowly revealed more and more of Ford’s character. He was such a good man. Ford’s relationship with Amber was so sweet. Ford’s shopping trip with his teammates was so funny. It was even better when Amber found what he bought hidden in his closet. That whole storyline was so good.
I adored Amber. It was so fun to see her let herself fall for Ford. I thought her reasons for not seeing Ford as potential romantic partner before made so much sense. Her relationship with her mother really messed her up, so it was so good to see her interact with Ford and his family.
One of my favorite part of this story was Amber and Nella’s red hair. As a red head, I’m always excited to see a red headed FMC. I loved seeing Amber’s feelings about her red hair as a child. I also loved how much Ford loved Amber’s hair. It was such a fun experience for me to read.
I adored everything about this marriage of convenience hockey romance. From Ford’s teammates to his family to Ford’s relationship with Nella and Amber, it was such a wonderful story. Ford and Amber were so good together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Obsessed.
Oh my god, this book had everything. Friends to lovers, found family, “my wife”. Hot. Hot. Hot. I have been eating this series up and honestly Ford and Amber might be my favourite couple yet. I absolutely love that there’s no 3rd act break up in these books. I can’t wait for the next book. Also, Farrah and Bruce 👀

5.0 out of 5 stars Hockey players
They're a bread apart and I love reading about them. It makes sense that someone on the spectrum would be good at atrategy. It's very clever of him to copy social interactions,
His love life is a whole other ballgame. And who can resist a cute baby girl.

5.0 out of 5 stars Goal!
I loved this book. The characterisation was well done, the plot was fairly subtle, and now, having finished reading Betrothal or Breakaway, I’m feeling slightly bereft… I hope Ms Bruner has more DC Eagles Hockey books to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars fades to black romance never felt so good
My heart has a special place for MCs who are soft from their core and has that giving nature. Ford aka Remy has been friends with Amber from as long as he can remember so when he knows that Amber is now not engaged and with a kid but also a hole in her heart he wanted to do everything possible to help her, save her and protect her. Even if it means convincing her to marry him for the insurance but also for him to be able to take care of Nella. I am a sucker for marriage of convenience and when it’s between friends? It’s blurry lines and care that’s unconditional. The bond Ford had formed with Nella and also the found family vibes. I loved it so much. The feels and emotions, everything made me feel more.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars
I really wish that Amazon would start introducing half stars. This book wasn’t a full five stars for me, but it was better than four stars, so I decided to go for a five star rating with this attached statement.
Anyway. I thought this book was quite enjoyable. Ford and Amber were interesting and appealing characters. Their story was unique in many ways. I don’t want to offer up any spoilers, so I will just say that one of the characters is dealing with some cognitive challenges that I didn’t see coming. It definitely added a thought provoking element to what was otherwise a sweet love story.
Another thing I think some readers might want to have highlighted is that Amber is coming into her romantic relationship with Ford soon after having had another man’s child. While I think this would be very appealing to some readers, I think it might also not appeal to others. As such, I thought that I would point it out.
This book alludes to sex, but nothing beyond kissing and holding is described on page.
