Inn In Abingdon Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 100 ratings

Spencer Aubrey finds more than inspiration.

While attempting to write his second novel at the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon, Virginia, Spencer desperately seeks a way to put his life back together after being separated from the love of his life and losing his career job as a successful newspaper columnist.

At the inn, Spencer meets Katherine Broadwater, a young girl he believes to be from a local theater because of her old-fashioned dress and southern dialect. He becomes captivated by the story she weaves about herself and a boy named Sam that took place during the Civil War when the inn was used as a hospital for wounded soldiers.

While seeking to learn the outcome of the passionate love story she shares, doubt and confrontation challenge Spencer as he tries to convince everyone that the elusive Katherine does exist.
Or has his troubled past burdened his sanity to separate truth from fantasy?

Very good, enjoyable and tugged at my heart. Katherine's story kept my attention and had me hoping that she and Sam, with Spencer's unknowing help, would be reunited. Very well written, and very clean.

I was recently on an international trip, and was reading this book on a tour bus. As we entered a big city, the tour guide was telling us the places to visit. I could NOT put this book down, and look out the window! I had to keep turning the pages! I have read many novels in my career, but none have monopolized my attention like this one!
This author possesses a special talent, allowing the reader to "feel" the emotions of his characters. The story was mysterious, heartwarming, and inspiring. I plan on sharing this treasure with many others.

Being an avid reader, this was a wonderful story that intertwined the consequences of the "war between the states" and the personal "war" raging within the main character in a delightful way. As the stories gradually were revealed to the reader by the author, I quickly found myself "caught up" in the lives of those who were connected to the Abingdon Inn.
I look forward to someday reading more of the characters that were introduced in this enjoyable fiction work that carried many truths for living today. For me, Mr. Stevens was able to capture my interest immediately and held my interest throughout the book. I stayed up to finish it, once I got started

Author Donnie Stevens' historical romance, "Inn In Abingdon," is a clever blend of fact and fiction. It is true that the inn was built in 1832. Originally, it served as a private residence before becoming a school for young women. During the Civil War, however, it served as hospital for wounded Confederate soldiers. In modern times it has been called one of the most haunted structures Virginia.

These are the facts that draw Spencer Aubrey to the inn in the hopes of reviving his writing career and stabilizing his life. Upon meeting an actress from the local theater, Aubrey finds himself spellbound by the story she begins weaving during their first encounter. From that point in the story, intrigue and suspense draw the reader into this tale as fact and fiction become more and more difficult to discern. Without giving any more of the story away, I will end by saying this is a delightful and rewarding read.

If you like Civil War romance this will appeal to you. The Virginia love birds ate married in secret and a 21st century writer tells their story when he encounters the young bride who seems to be looking for her husband. It's clean with just a little heat and non descriptive marital bliss mentioned but you will have to find out how they get separated. I personally am not into this period in America's war history but thought the transition from present to past was clever and the whole story so credible in its flow between the two eras. I have a feeling that if the time period was a different choice this book would have easily rated 5 stars.
