- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2024What an interesting story. I really enjoyed the characters, so different from what I've read lately. It brings back history class for me, not in the sense that it gives facts, this very much if a wonderful story about the very early days of the settlement, when the were Indian raides and women and children were taken and raised by the natives.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2019An unusual time period and place for a romance story. The author did a great job incorporating the culture of the time. The story pivots around the fact that whites (in this case, children) were forcibly taken by Native Americans. Some were recovered after years in captivity and faced assimilation back to their communities who sometimes viewed them as heathens. Hence, the built in suspicions/caution between the two young people who cared for each other before the girl was captured. Likable characters. Clean romance.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2021I enjoyed this story of a time Europeans, seeking land, came to North America to claim it, even when the cost was conflict and often death or captivity at the hands of the Native Americans. Fear and distrust met those captives who returned, whether they came from the tribal people or the French. The conflict between Protestant and Catholic added to the prejudice. Yet this romance tells how a family was able get beyond suspicion and dislike. Great characters and dialogue, an interesting plot, and a satisfying conclusion made this a must-read.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2019Exchanged from being held captive for five years by Indians after the slaughter of her family following the French and Indian Wars, Sarah Minton returns to her small home town in Northern New Hampshire with no one to claim her - even her past love's family whose brother/son remains missing. Given shelter by the local pastor's family with two other young women, she finds herself initially ostracized by the town for being a heathen. Riveting and heart-rendering novel of the trials and tribulations of a town still broken from the effects of the raid with the need to heal and love one another once again. The first of three books, it is highly recommended as an excellent read for those who enjoy learning about this challenging time for settlers in American history.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2019Richard Dudley lived with his Mom and Dad, his sister, Catherine and brother, Stephen. They were all together the night of the Indian raid. Richard had just asked for his friend Sarah's hand in marriage the day before. Now What? Sarah is gone. Many characters and fast moving. I enjoyed reading this historical story!
