- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2022Now, this is how you start a series. Regardless if previously released or not.
Nika and Demyan are definitely bring on some serious chemistry. And I’m sooo looking forward to seeing more.
This may be the first time I’ve ever read anything from this author. But it is DEFINITELY not going to be the last.
Any opinions expressed within this review are solely and uniquely made by me and I am happily leaving this review. I originally voluntarily received an advanced copy of this book via bsprout.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2022To say I was shocked about this book is an understatement. I have come to expect nothing but the best from D. H. Gibbs. I couldn't put this book down and neither will you once you start reading. Definitely a page turner and makes you want to finish it in one sitting.

A once great people, split into factions as magick leaves the world. The Regulars, the Immortals, and the Totems. The Regulars, having lost their immortal abilities, forget their ancient past connection with the other factions, and begin to fear their differences, nearly wiping them to extinction, so they move into hiding where they thrive once more, until the uniting of a king and queen from each race.
This book had so much potential, so much. The background, the set up, the stealing away of the last Immortal princess, having lived with Regulars since she was a child and her nanny fled with her to save her life, not knowing who or what she really was, only that she heals quickly and is 120 years old. All the history and awareness coming flooding in as her second in command divulges why they had to bring her back. It really had so much potential, and that's why I've given it 3 stars.
My issue, is that this book was not well written. If it weren't for the fact that it wasn't well written, I would absolutely read the rest of this series. It's overly dramatic while characters are in dialogue in a reactive way that's almost hard to believe. The novella is 96 pages, and this includes previews for the first book in the series, and I had an incredibly hard time getting through it.
Damyan is an articulate and careful character, when he isn't suddenly sucking face with our protagonist and then insisting that they cannot get involved even though he's the one starting it. His characters is consistently written throughout and seems to have been well thought out as such.
Nika is 120 years old, but is painfully immature. There are glimpses, outside of conversation, where she appears to be a different person altogether and I liked her, but then she needs to speak and it all comes back. I could have really enjoyed this character if she were more consistently polished and not Hannah Montanta every 10 pages.
The description of this book is enticing, it's why I chose it. But I was really let down. There's no struggle or fight for freedom, there's no convincing Nika to claim her throne, there's just abrupt "I'll show you your room", "Tomorrow I'll show you the grounds", "Tonight we'll have dinner" and she decides to be queen then "Let's have a birthday party". I'm not buying into the epic adventure.
Also, it needs a thorough comb through by an editor. The POV switch in random lines to first from third is jarring, and so is the flow of the story in general.
I likely won't read any more of this series. At least if I decide to pick it up I'll know what's going on, and hopefully there's growth.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 21, 2022I'm hooked! It is a shorter book, which I don't mind every now and then, except for the cliffhanger endings!
My all time favorite books have strong female leads that stay strong. Nika is definitely one of those strong females and I'm loving her. The comradery she has with Alex is great! Made me laugh more than I expected. The attraction that could be happening between Nika and Demyan has you enthralled with every page they are in hoping something more interesting will happen, but like I said...... CLIFFHANGERS! This one seriously left me wanting more and I can't wait for the next one.

The world building is detailed and imaginative. It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. This book has strong, well-developed characters, an interesting story line full of suspense, danger, action, mystery, unexpected twists, passion, and a cliffhanger that left me wanting to read the next book in the series. - Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2022The author created some great characters with a plot that will keep you turning the pages. Nika is kidnapped from the street near her home. She is held captive by some people looking for a lost leader. One of them is Damyen. He is a tall man with mysterious blue eyes and he seems to know a lot about Nika. There is a lot to learn about the world of Seychatka which is the world that Nika should have been in. Because Nika was betrayed by a man she loved, she was forced to keep many secrets. I loved this story and once I started it, i couldn't put it down
