Moon Rising, the first book of The Upsilon Series authored by Daniel Weisbeck, gifts readers with an exceptional writing style, both descriptive and intriguing, to create a unique science fiction novel. Weisbeck does a fine job crafting an interesting protagonist character with a compelling internal dialogue. The narration struck me as unusually abstract, yet pleasantly intriguing. I found myself yearning for more of this point of view from such a curious and observational mind. Later on I realized why this particular character thought in such a distinctive way. The opening pages definitely captured my attention quickly as more of the setting unfolded. Shrouded in mystery, readers slowly gain more context clues from the narration and are offered opportunities to make assumptions about what is actually taking place. A sense that anything is possible is created and this uncertainty to be uncovered really propelled me forward into the story. I wasn’t sure if I was liking where the story was going or not. It was bordering the line between mysteriousness and creepiness, until it clicked at the end of the first part. Distributed into four parts, the narration shifts characters and readers learn more from a new perspective. I enjoyed the shift between narration and the introduction to the new character voice at the beginning of part two. Weisbeck did an excellent job making a clear distinction without overtly explaining. Readers are able to follow along with the change of narration in a clear manner. I appreciated the quality of writing in this novel. Even with the massive obscurity of the story throughout part one of the novel, the quality of writing ensured me that a very interesting plot would ensue as I continued onto part two. Without giving too much away, the story quickly became less creepy and more complex as readers slowly learn the bigger picture. From here, Weisbeck lays it thick. The story becomes fast-paced and the writing even throws in some humor within the suspense. As I read, I was easily imagining what this story would look like on the big screen. I love when a good book has me visualizing the different scenes. Part two transitions into part three with a plot twist and readers are back with the original protagonist for narration. At part three, the plot intensified dramatically while casually building up the plot for the next book in the series. As the plot increases in scope it reveals new potential themes for book two. Also in part three, the narration switches again to a third character perspective where we learn more of the story. These varied viewpoints makes it interesting to learn more of the story from different character viewpoints. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this novel, to the point where I would not want to reveal any major spoilers. This sci-fi plot was more relatable than otherworldly and still did a great job introducing new concepts for introspection. It was also easy to follow the technologically advanced jargon and without having the reader feel lost in translation. I can easily see this series turning into a motion picture, not only due to the plot itself but also because the descriptive imagery was so well written that the scenes were clearly seen in the minds eye. Moon Rising is a well-written novel that kept me flipping through the pages from start to finish. Fantastic read and excited to see how the plot continues to unfold within the upcoming books of the Upsilon Series.

I have always heard of the phrase "expect the unexpected." Basically, it means that anything can happen and probably will. Now, you're probably wondering why I'm bringing this phrase up. Let me tell you why. It's all because of Moon Rising: The Upsilon Series by Daniel Weisback. That book definitely fits the idiom. The book had me gripping my phone very tightly, because I was hooked to this story. I never really expected that I would like anything like this book, but I did. Two of the main characters were very likable and there were scenes in the book that made my jaw actually dropped. It's insane how fun this book was to read and how intense it was. The only thing I wish is that it was a bit longer. That's the only negative criticism I have about it. Other than that, I would recommend this book for any young adult that likes futuristic books. I also rate it a 4 out of 5 stars.

Keep it short and simple, this book was a very fun read. The book will switch perspective between different main characters between chapters, I don't mind this, but I can understand why someone else would not. I can't wait to read the rest of the series when it releases.

This dark mystery thriller is the first book in The Upsilon Series written by Daniel Weisbeck. The main characters Silon, Dr. Booby Houndstooth and Nutt are very well developed and their story is so piquant I was mesmerized while reading… This sci-fi book is very suspenseful and entertaining because it explores many topics. Also it is full of action, twists and turns. I can’t wait to read other books in the series since I liked so much this one and I am sure I won’t be disappointed by the sequels. I will certainly read other works from the same author and I will look for them if there is more because I loved Daniel Weisbeck’s writing style. I would certainly recommend this book to others because it caught my attention from the very first pages, I felt like I couldn’t put it down and I am sure that other dark thriller lovers like me will be rewarded.

This book was a fantastic, thrilling read. The main character is the driving force of this story. She is wonderfully developed and well grounded, it is clear the author has spent a lot of time getting to know her. The plot is brilliantly developed and paced well, it was a wild ride and I certainly enjoyed it. This book was a compulsive read for me, as soon as I started it I was unable to put it down.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable cyberpunk thriller with lots of potential going forward.

I very much enjoyed this book and am looking forward to upcoming entries in the series.

The opening was very strong, and very dark! I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into at first but I'm glad I got on board.

The book's length was both a blessing and a curse, I think. A blessing, because it's nice being able to get through a whole book in just a few hours, but a curse because the plot shoots past. Characters aren't given sufficient development time for you to be invested in them. Characters are introduced to the reader, but one of the primary protagonists has already known them for years and has an established relationship and it's a bit hard to get on the same level as the protagonists.

I do like how this book is told through different viewpoints; sometimes the same events are told through different view points. This in of and itself is not necessarily a bad thing as the same events can be given different context from a different perspective, however I don't think this book quite achieves the potential of that premise.

My constructive feedback would be to concentrate a bit more on world building, I walked away with only a vague idea of what this version of Earth is like in this Universe, and I'm keen to learn more from my vague glance into it. This might be a better use of a word/page budget than retelling the same events from different perspectives.

Thematically, I don't think this book tackles anything that hasn't been tackled before in the cyberpunk genre.

I'm on board for this series as I love the genre, and this book was well written enough, with an interesting enough premise, and enough world building to get my invested.

Bad bits. The book is fairly short and I'm not thrilled with the present tense writing style. It's awkward. Telling the same piece of story from different peoples perspectives is easily interpreted as a lack of ideas or padding.

Good bits. The characters are well created and you attach to the main protagonist. The story is well told and I'd like to read further. I would like to get a somewhat larger read next time though.
