WINNER OF THE 2020 INTERNATIONAL VAMPIRE FILM & ARTS FESTIVAL SILVER STAKE AWARD.
Clueless Witch Meets Quirky Vampire: an enchanting tale of love and magic.
“The highly original plot combines the best of paranormal with the best of romance: a tantalizing, unputdownable read.” —The Booklife Prize critic’s report.
A magical story about a lost witch recovering her self-esteem and overcoming a terrible mistake, a seemingly cheerful vampire with a tortured past, and finding love in the most unexpected of places.
Alba is about to lose everything after her divorce... until she meets The Vampires of Emberbury, who dwell under an abandoned graveyard, stuck in Victorian times. They will make her a very interesting job offer, and she will get to meet Clarence, a mysterious vampire gentleman who thinks cloaks and top hats are still in fashion. With his help, Alba will figure out that, sometimes, the scariest monster isn’t the one with fangs.
This is a slow-burn paranormal vampire romance and magical realism novel that deals with worldly issues in a magical, humorous way and guarantees to make you laugh, cry, and gasp as you follow Alba and Clarence on their quest to solve Alba’s real-life troubles in a fairy-tale setting.
Stray Witch is the first book in The Vampires of Emberbury series. It can also be read as a stand-alone story.
Praise for Stray Witch:
“I loved this story! The pacing was steady, and the characters were well-developed and realistic. I found it very easy to relate to Alba, to sympathize with her, and to cheer her on as she fought to protect her daughters and start a new life. I really liked Clarence, the mysterious gentlemanly vampire. I was especially intrigued by his dark past and wanted to know more. I also enjoyed the slow-burn romantic subplot between Alba and Clarence.” —Angela’s Book Addiction.
“The highly original plot combines the best of paranormal with the best of romance. (…) Each character is lovingly detailed, vivid in perspective. The slow teasing out of each’s history allows for a tantalizing, unputdownable read.”—The Booklife Prize critic’s report.
“Written in the alternating first-person perspective of Alba and Clarence, the reader is allowed a glimpse into their intertwined lives as two people who shouldn't have fallen in love try to discover their feelings and themselves. (...) Self-discovery, romance, heartbreak, and challenges fill this sweet romance in which you can't help but root for the main characters.” —Reader’s Favorite.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2020This book...is hard to put into words. I have thought for a while what to write in my review and nothing quite expresses the way I feel about it. It’s perfect in every way. It spoke to the deepest parts of my heart and it gave me hope.
The characters are so real you can almost imagine them standing next to you, and the way the author portrays the progession of their relationship is flawless, just like her writing. Everything in this story flows. It all makes sense and it’s magical, beautiful, romantic, heart breaking and heart melting at the same time. When you read it, you feel each word happening, as if you were watching a movie. There is never a word that isn’t significant, and the author always points out just the right things to set the mood for each scene.
If you can’t relate to the protagonist, you are a very lucky person and let this book be a reminder of that. If you can relate to her, this book will give you hope too, just like it did for me.
The one thing I want to point out is that the cover is very not matching with the vibe of the book. So don’t make your decision on reading this book based on the cover at all. Use the summary as the guide to decide.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2021The book has a little of everything. Witches. Vampires. Spirits. And romance. A marvelously entertaining read.
We have a witch who doesn't know she's a witch and isn't sure she believes she really is. Then there are vampires (which take her a little getting used to) who need her help, and a cat that's not your ordinary cat.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2020This is beautifully written. The descriptions of the Cloister and all other settings are so well detailed and frankly a little romantic. So much fun to read, but also very inspiring. Despite the whimsical nature of the story and its very good fit in the fantasy genre, it also touches subjects that many women go through in real life such as divorce, domestic violence, financial abuse, etc. I was hooked the whole time and I do not like to give away spoilers, but it has strong aspects of freedom, escape, and bit of poetic justice that I thoroughly enjoyed. However, in a very realistic way, the new life Alba begins to build through her newfound contacts and power is very messy, as is dealing with her narcissistic and vindictive ex-husband, Mark. There is also something so fierce about the way that the main character Alba maintains her good nature throughout some very dark moments in her new life and her continuing struggles from her divorce. I like that she is full of feelings and confused sometimes. I felt connected to her in many ways because of that, particularly with the way that love for her daughters and Clarence is what moved her to be more defensive or aggressive against Mark. I also enjoyed the way that this story gives us a more intricate view of mystical creatures like vampires and witches. An unexpected and pleasant surprise as the story develops is the feeling of seeing a more human side, whether good or bad, to these mystical beings. I also enjoy how the narration switches from Alba to Clarence, and how their voices are so different. One of my favorite lines is “there’s darkness inside all of us. We just deal with it differently, he said, drawing shapes with his fingers on the back of my hand.” In short, I loved everything about it and I really lived Alba’s emotions along with her.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2020There was a lot to like in this story, the backgrounds of the protagonists making them easy to relate to. But the biggest turn off for me was the heroine's lack of backbone. I kept waiting for her to get really pissed off. Nope.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2020Stray Witch by indie author Eva Alton is Book 1 in The Vampires of Emberbury series. The story follows Alba’s life. She’s trapped in a loveless marriage to a narcissist named Mark and meets Clarence, a vampire, that’s been sent to recruit her to work for The Cloister. He reveals what she really is. She’s no mere mortal. She’s a witch who comes from a long line of witches. Alba doesn’t believe, but she’s faced with a choice to continue in a toxic marriage or pretend to be this witch and get away from the dangerous man she lives with.
Alton has created a lovely story with twists and turns one doesn’t expect until you're in them. I found myself rooting for Alba, angry at her, wanting to kick her in the backside and cheering her on. The story had me hooked from the first page to the last. The pace was executed very well. She writes with eloquence and paces the book perfectly where the highs are high and the lows are low. The author masterfully created Mark as an antagonist I loved to hate and Clearance, the broody vampire with a dark past was hard to resist and can’t seem to keep away from Alba. The plot, characters, and story arc are all fully developed and believable.
All and all I absolutely enjoyed this book from the storyline to the characters. I became emotionally invested in them and can’t wait to see what happens next when Book 2 in the series, Witch’s Mirror, publishes on December 5, 2020. I would recommend this read to anyone who loves the paranormal romance and magical realism genres.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2020I devoured this book in a day... seriously, couldn't put it down. Some of Alba's experiences hit a little too close to home, but I hung in there and I'm so glad I did. This story gave me all the feels... frustration, fear, intrigue, and relief (just to name a few). There were some laugh-out-loud moments. I'm pretty sure my heart stopped at one point (no spoilers here). And, yes, I've fallen hopelessly in love with Clarence. I loved the attention to detail (pretty sure I felt a glob of moss fall on my head) and the flawed multi-dimensional characters. The pacing was perfect. I know this book was 380 pages, but I would have liked to see some of those developments in the epilogue incorporated into the main story so they could be captured in more detail. Bottom line... I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I'm already having withdrawals, so I have pre-ordered the next book in the series. I highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2020It was an interesting story, with interesting characters. But Alba had given her power to trust plan up. Had she shared her problems, she would've had the help needed much sooner.

4.0 out of 5 stars Witches, vampires, and a thrill-a-minute story!
I love a good witch story and I've always enjoyed vampire lore, so when I discovered this book, I bought it immediately. The story begins with Alba, a woman who doesn't know she is a witch, brought to an underground vampire community to be their assistant. They're looking for someone whom they won't feed from (vampires don't like the smell of witch blood), and who can do daylight errands like paying bills and buying things from stores. Alba is looking for a way to escape from her abusive husband, and moves into the underground world with her young daughters.
My favourite parts were the chapters about her settling into her new life and learning the ways of the vampire world. But after that, the story begins to get more complicated - she develops feelings for a mysterious vampire, her husband begins to chase her, and a long-dead witch has secrets that Alba must discover. The story moves fast, and you'll find yourself reading at a fast pacet too, just to keep up with what happens. Will be picking up the next books in the Stray Witch series.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it
Stray Witch was an absolute delight. I blew through the pages because it's an intriguing story and, unlike most vampire romance novels, the MC is not a young slip of a thing; she's a middle aged, soon to be divorced mother of two. I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling Story
"Stray Witch" is a captivating tale of empowerment, friendship, and love that will keep readers on the edge of their seats. The protagonist, Alba, is a single mother who finds herself in a difficult situation after divorcing her abusive husband. However, her life takes an unexpected turn when she meets a secret society of vampires and discovers her own hidden powers as a witch.
As Alba navigates her newfound abilities, she struggles to control them, leading to some unpredictable and thrilling moments. Despite the challenges she faces, it is clear that Alba is a force to be reckoned with, and her journey of self-discovery is both empowering and inspiring.
The romance between Alba and Clarence, a vampire she befriends, adds an extra layer of intrigue to the story. Their relationship is built on trust and mutual respect, and watching it develop throughout the book is both heartwarming and exciting.
The ending of "Stray Witch" is both unexpected and satisfying, as Alba successfully breaks free from her past and embraces her independence. However, her complicated relationship with Clarence leaves readers wanting more, eager to see where their story will go next.
Overall, "Stray Witch" is a spellbinding read that combines elements of fantasy, romance, and empowerment in a unique and engaging way. Fans of vampire romance and stories of female empowerment will not be disappointed by this captivating tale.

2.0 out of 5 stars A medium read
The plot is solid enough but the writing and the characters depiction is somehow bland, and I found the story telling naive. I didn’t finish reading the second book in the series.
