David Farland (the pen name for David Wolverton) passed away on January 14, 2022, at the age of 64, after falling down the stairs and suffering a hemorrhagic stroke.
David was well known for his science fiction and fantasy books and was hailed as “the wizard of story telling.” His books include The Runelord series, the Raven Spell series, The Golden Queen series, the Serpant Catch series, On My Way to Paradise, books on writing, and many short stories.
Author of the Runelord Series
I personally loved the Runelord series. The first book in this series is called The Sum of All Men. Here is the description:
Young Prince Gaborn Val Orden of Mystarria is traveling in disguise on a journey to ask for the hand of the lovely Princess Iome of Sylvarresta. Armed with his gifts of strength and perception, Prince Gaborn and his warrior bodyguard stop in a local tavern along the way. Immediately, they spot a pair of assassins who have their sights set on Princess Iome’s father. As the prince and his bodyguard race to warn the king of this impending danger, they realize that more than the royal family is at risk, the very fate of the Earth is in jeopardy.
A Teacher and Mentor
Beyond writing, David was also a teacher and mentor. He taught workshops and master classes, as well as classes at BYU, and he participated on many panels for conferences and conventions. He mentored many well-known fiction writers with their careers, including Brandon Sanderson, Brandon Moore, Jessica Day George, James Dashner, and Stephanie Meyer.
Many of those whose lives he touched have offered tributes on social media, where we can catch a small glimpse of how appreciated he was by so many people. David was a kind man who was always willing to help others and lift them up.
David, you will be sorely missed.
I am reminded of the words from the song: “The good, they die young”. Granted, David wasn’t a musician, but he made music and pictures with his words. I’ll miss him!
Sorry for the loss of such a great writer blessing to his family. God’s with you, my prayers are being said for your family peace at this time best wishes. Mrs H. Boersma
