We’ve previously covered the best book box subscriptions for beautiful, custom-edition books. Now, we’ll cover the book box subscriptions that are the best for improving your reading experience and having fun.
Book subscription boxes are a rising trend where companies send out monthly, bi-monthly, or quarterly book boxes. These book boxes often feature newer released novels or classics and often come with extra perks like being signed by authors, author letters, exclusive editions, bookish-related items, and more.
There tend to be those book subscriptions that are focused more on collecting special editions of books and those that focus more on curating a reading experience.
The subscriptions focused more on a reading experience containing things like gifts that go along with the book as you read. For example, once you make it to a certain page number you’re able to open a special package that goes along with the story. Or perhaps they just come with items like candles, coffee, treats, and other items curated for your relaxation and joy.

The Best Book Box Subscriptions for Furthering Your Love of Reading
1. Book of the Month
Book of the Month may just be one of the most popular book box subscriptions that there is. They were one of the first, and they’ve adapted over the years to ensure that they continue being one of the best. They make it easy and affordable to get newly released hardcover books for a reasonable cost.
Book of the Month works by curating five new hardcovers each month that their subscribers can then choose from. If you pay monthly this new hardcover book is 17.99, but if you pay yearly it’s just 13.99. That’s a heck of a deal for a newly released hardback book! If you can’t decide on just one, they have the option to add some of the other books for $9.99 each.
Book of the Month has the largest selection of books available each month. They also work closely with Oprah’s book club selections, if those are something you’re interested in.
We love this cost-effective method of discovering new books and authors. It’s like a fun, monthly, physical book treat to complement our daily discounted and free ebook deals service.
Visit Book of the Month today to see what book options are available right now, and receive your first book for just $5!
2. Once Upon a Book Club
Once Upon a Book Club is one of my absolute favorite book boxes. They are a book + items box subscription, but instead of being random items, these items are curated to go along with the story and help immerse you in the story.
As you’re reading, you’ll be prompted to open the three to five gits included with your box at specific points. When you’re done, you’ll have some fun items to use or display on your shelves along with your book.
Once Upon a Book Club has adult books, YA books, middle-grade books, and limited edition boxes. They have the option to purchase a subscription to receive a new book experience each month, or you can visit their online shop to purchase ready-to-ship boxes. Boxes are generally available in their general shop after the monthly subscription box has gone out but with a ten-dollar markup.
We feel that this is a great box subscription for avid readers looking for an immersive experience, but also for readers who aren’t quite as motivated. Reading toward your goal of opening the next item can be a highly encouraging experience.
So if you’re looking to add a little extra fun to your next reading adventure, this is definitely the book box for you.
Check Once Upon a Book Club and receive $5 off your first purchase.
3. OwlCrate Jr.
OwlCrate also makes the special edition list for their adult subscribers, but I feel that their junior box subscription belongs here. It is curated for young readers to help foster a love of reading. It targets ages 8-12 and includes a hardcover novel and signed goodies, an activity or game, 3 to 5 fun items based on the monthly theme, collectible character trading cards, and access to OwlCrate’s digital magazine.
Much like their adult book subscription, the Jr. books are exclusive editions with features such as author signature, exclusive dust jackets, cover, and end page designs, and include a special author letter and digital reading guide written by the author!
There aren’t too many book boxes out there that cater to kids in the middle ages, so this is a great option to have from a very reputable company. It’s great for both kids who already love to read as well as kids who could use a little more encouragement. Kids get really excited to receive this box and I’m counting down the years until I can sign my kids up.
They do reveal their books ahead of time, so you’ll know whether or not a book will be interesting to your reader or if you can skip that month. The items, however, are only partially revealed ahead of time.
While they have several past boxes available on their site for purchase, they come at a slightly higher cost than if you purchase a subscription.
Check out their past boxes to see if this is a box subscription that your little readers would love.
4. Hunt a Killer
Hunt a Killer isn’t a book-specific subscription per se, but fans of thrillers and mysteries still love this subscription. Over the course of six months, you’ll receive clues to help you catch the serial killer. These clues might be police files, case files, autopsies, evidence, pictures, audio files, and more. Combining physical evidence with interactive digital gameplay, our story-driven games provide an immersive way to test your detective skills.
You’ve spent years judging the protagonists in your novels for not being able to pick up on clues and solve the mystery that you solved ahead of time, this is your chance to see if your detective skills really are everything you think they are.
Another huge pro to this box is that it’s not something you have to do alone. Get your partner, friends, and family involved as you crime solve.
This company also offers other mystery games and activities in addition to its monthly subscription.

5. Introverts Retreat
Reading is supposed to be relaxing, right? That’s the motto behind Introverts Retreat. They’ve created a book box focused on helping you relax as you enjoy your next great book.
Each box includes a candle, a bag of bath salts, a unique bar of handmade soap, a tasty snack from a small business, and a book of your choice! Unlike most book boxes, you can pick from their library of 25 novels hot off the press. This ensures you’ll be able to find something you’ll love.
The best part of getting a box focused on relaxation is that it’s a great reminder to all the busy moms and women in your life to take a break once in a while. This is why this is one of our favorite book box subscriptions to gift.
Right now, they’re offering one box free when you subscribe to a 6-month or year-long subscription.
6. Bookroo
The Bookroo subscription box is great for parents, grandparents, and others who are looking to share their love of reading with budding readers. They offer book subscriptions for ages 0–3, 3–6, 7–10. and 9–12.
Unlike other kids’ subscriptions that offer whatever books they can get on the overstock market, these books are carefully curated custom editions with uniform height and brightly colored, coordinated spines. A dream for moms creating an insta-worthy playspace.
The youngest readers, ages 0–3, will receive three board books each month. The older groups will receive two.
This company also has created a platform to help kids discover more books that they’ll like, so they really know their way around kids’ books. This knowledge is what makes this a very good subscription box as these ages can sometimes be tricky to find good book recommendations for.
Check them out today and make sure you spin the wheel to get a discount on your first order.
